Deadwater Fell writer Daisy Coulam wanted the drama to be ‘a study of a man who kills his family’.In the final episode on Friday night it was revealed that Tom (David Tennant) was responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, injecting them – and himself – with insulin before setting fire to their home.Daisy revealed she had always planned on Tom being the killer, as she wanted to explore the topic of familicide after her research highlighted that such cases are on the rise.She told Metro.co.uk: ‘We talked to a forensic psychologist who was our advisor and she gave us lots of cases, and unfortunately there are lots of cases to study.‘She was saying that familicide is on the increase and in fact, if you start looking at the news almost every week there’s someone who has been murdered by their husband or boyfriend, or children had been murdered.‘So we felt like it was a timely issue and we just wanted to explore it. We wanted to do an exploration of coercive control really.’She also revealed her thoughts on what became of troubled couple Steve (Matthew McNulty) and Jess (Cush Jumbo), who had reached a crossroads in their relationship after Jess cheated with Tom.The writer was ‘desperate for them to survive Tom’ and feels their heart to heart in the finale helped them move forward.‘I think they stayed together and are stronger for it.
