order xenarthra

Xenarthrans were previously classified alongside the pangolins and aardvarks in the order Edentata (meaning toothless, because the members do not have incisors and lack, or have poorly developed, molars). These New World animals (from the Americas) all lack front teeth; some have enamel-less cheek teeth. Although at one time xenarthrans were found throughout the Americas, today only one xenarthran, the nine-banded armadillo, is found as far north as the United States. Xenarthran, (magnorder Xenarthra), an ancient lineage of mammals comprising the armadillos (order Cingulata) and the sloths and anteaters (order Pilosa).

The lumbar vertebrae are “xenarthrous”; that is, they have extra contacts (joints, or arthroses) that function to strengthen the lower back and hips. Our editors will review what you’ve submitted and determine whether to revise the article.Xenarthran diets range from strictly insectivorous in anteaters, which eat only ants and termites, to strictly folivorous in sloths, which eat only leaves. Authorities have tended to agree they are a primitive group of placental mammals not very closely related to other orders, without agreeing on how to classify them.

Xenarthran metabolisms, however, are similar in that all are low compared with those of other mammals; some burn calories at less than half the rate expected for mammals of similar size. As a result, xenarthrans eat less than other mammals and have body temperatures that are a few degrees cooler.Present distribution of xenarthrans is restricted to Order Cingulata consists primarily of armoured armadillo-like animals, and the name refers to the girdlelike shell of present-day armadillos.
(Tree sloths lost these articulations to increase the flexibility of their spines, but their fossil ancestors had xenarthrous joints.)
