What sets Prange’s effort apart is his deep dive into Japanese sources and his ability to directly interview participants on both sides following the war. Amazing. But Nimitz had the good sense to believe that intelligence; to name Spruance, a calm sort, in the ailing Halsey's place; to send lots of air power, and no ""dead wood"" battleships, to Midway; to insist on ""the principle of calculated risk."" Prange is very clear about the work involved in figuring out where the attack would come, pretty much the Japanese order of battle, their location and so forth. I really enjoy reading the Midway story, so I have read quite a few of the Midway books. Whether you've loved the book or not, if you give your honest and detailed thoughts then people will find new books that are right for them. The good thing about flights (sometimes) is that books can be read in large heaps during these direct flights. There was so much information in Miracle at Midway, that at times I felt overwhelmed.
