Gatsby is dating Ashleigh (Fanning), a peppy, preppy gal with sweaters and short skirts from an earlier age, who as a student journalist has been given the chance to go to Manhattan and interview tortured movie director Roland Pollard (Ashleigh and Gatsby agree to go together, but the rain inspires romantic adventures; Ashleigh winds up in farcical situations with Pollard, with his screenwriter, Ted Davidoff (The movie is decorated in those downbeat, autumnal yellows, ochres and browns that are such an important part of Allen’s palette, with people wearing a lot of sweaters and corduroys, and it is shot by Vittorio Storaro who, as so often while working with Allen, goes in for that golden-tan glow. It’s a huge shame that this was the Woody Allen film he got put in (and, given his public apology for taking part, it’ll definitely be his last), as it’s hard to imagine anyone else from the same generation pulling off Allen’s dialogue with such a perfect mix of sophisticated awkwardness. That can only be a wry, self-aware joke – and yet, despite the jumping all over cultural references that happens everywhere else in the screenplay, no character here goes anywhere near that outrageous moniker. Other deals fell through, plans for an autobiography were mired in more controversy, and Allen now stands close to being cancelled altogether – but his most recent film is now quietly coming out online in the UK.

Still, grateful though I was that A Rainy Day in New York had finally found a receptive audience in spite of the campaigns to sabotage it, I approached Allen’s latest offering with some trepidation. His last three films, Café Society, Irrational Man, and Wonder Wheel had been dreadful.

A Rainy Day in New York review – Woody Allen romance is a washout Bad weather leads to adventure as young lovers Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning take a trip to Manhattan Damp squib … And … it’s not as bad as you might think, but the fade-to-black that precedes the final credits brings with it the now traditional dull sadness for that lost Allen era in which all this was great.Well, there is some surface narrative drive, one or two pretty good lines and Chalamet is fey and winsome in the role of a wealthy young undergraduate at an upstate liberal arts college, who has the entirely preposterous name of Gatsby Welles. Editor’s note: “A Rainy Day in New York” opens this week in Paris. There is an odd moment when Gatsby sits down at a baby grand piano to play a song (the Sinatra standard Everything Happens to Me) and he actually pauses beforehand to switch on a standard lamp, just to get a semi-circle of that all-important musty, orangey light, which spreads its airless pall everywhere. Yet, because there is little or no sunshine, this glow comes from the indoor lighting. A Rainy Day In New York was finished back in 2018, but Amazon decided to ditch it in the wake of the #MeToo Movement – making it the first year since 1981 that Allen hadn’t released a new movie.
It does not have U.S. distribution. If Chalamet is Gatsby Welles (presumably because “Orson Fitzgerald” sounded too ridiculous? ), a romantic wanderer, thinker-out-loud and rich intellectual from another age – the classic Allen hero. The film looks great, too, with legendary cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (If you’re a fan of Woody there are a few reasons to give this a go.
