The effects were more than convincing--they were compelling, especially in the disaster scenes (see parental warning below), but really beside the point next to a powerfully human story. Likewise, even though the film is strongly based in the Bible (drawing on Ezekiel much more than the heavily mined text of Revelations) the religious element is subtle until late in the story, and even when it surfaces and moves to the center never feels forced or doctrinaire; it didn't bother this unbeliever at all. I love the cinematography, the atmosphere, the tone, the premise, the score and especially the tense moments scattered throughout this film. First off, I'm not going to say that I think "Knowing" is one of the greatest films ever made, nor do I think it's a perfect film by any means as it does have a few problems, but overall, I've always really enjoyed this one.
