Lessons of Darkness, is a short documentary on the oil fields of Kuwaiti and the destruction of the landscape done by man. Herzog is an incredibly gifted film maker. The American public had become fairly oversaturated by images of the Gulf War from the media around them. I assume this was a publisher error rather than Big Box Bargains' fault. Filmed in essentially the same manner–swooping helicopter shots depicting the earth as an alien landscape, strange peoples shown without explanation, epic narration and a sweeping score–Lessons of Darkness makes the earlier film Lessons of Darkness is barely an hour long, but boy, it's a great hour. It's my all time favorite film. The film is a tribute to the remarkable efforts of the oil well firemen from Texas and Louisiana who extinguished the fires in record time. The message is clear: man is shown by Herzog as an alien; as a grotesque creature that has broken the eerie order of nature in the name of cosmic boredom. ""The oil is treacherous because it reflects the sky" -Werner Herzog, Ostensibly this is about a fire in an oil field in Kuwait but it's really also about the culture and hardship of the neighboring environment.
