The story of how these institutions impose Structural Adjustment policies that prevent countries from spending public resources on public needs is one that could be told in many places around the world.

Life + Debt Provides A clear analysis of globalization and its negative effects.

That's what they want.

''Life and Debt,'' a documentary by Stephanie Black, with a commentary written by Jamaica Kincaid, looks at the effect of the International Monetary Fund on the economy of Jamaica.

It really gives an insight in alot of what was happening behind the scenes that we the public was not aware of. I saw this film many years ago, in my more impressionable years, and recently I decided to buy it and check it out... with doubts about whether I'd still find it persuasive.

who is suffering?A Portrait of the Problems All Third World Countries Now Face Using Jamaica As the Prototype

The movie offers the clearest analysis of globalization and its negative effects that I've ever seen on a movie or television screen. An IMF-backed small business loan in Jamaica might carry 25 percent interest. My sister recommended this documentary to me.

I like, also, that it gives a little voice to the pro- side (IMF), even though that's clearly not where its sympathies lie.

The bottom line: Developing economies of the Third World are deliberately destroyed and turned into captive markets for the rich nations, while their once self-sufficient inhabitants become cheap labor and local competition is penalized. Are these charges true? Does a phenomenal job of showing the human side of international economic policies: who is benefiting?

I can't think of another documentary that so effectively captures the issues of neoliberalism.

It also shows how brilliant the UNITED STATES, THE WORLD BANK, AND THE IMF ARE AT LOOKING OUT FOR ITS OWN INTREST. I do not have the expertise to say.

I think everyone should get this DVD especially if you are a Jamaican or W.I.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Jamaica long ago repaid the principal of the loans it contracted in the 1970s and 80s, but now owes the IMF more than $9 billion in interest.

The United States, Japan, Germany, England, Canada and Italy control more than 80 percent of the votes.

Remember slavery? Other markets reflect the same policies: Subsidized Idaho potatoes have bankrupted Jamaican potato farmers, McDonald's refuses to buy local meat; sweet Jamaican onions are underpriced by American onions sold at a loss, and so on.One scheme to help the Jamaican economy, the film says, has been the establishment of ''free zones,'' fenced-in manufacturing areas where workers are paid $30 a week to assemble goods which arrive and leave by container ship without legally being on Jamaican soil. who is exerting power? I was speechless after watching this movie.

The IMF may have contributed to the poverty and the economical downfall of the country but the lack of care for the people to even reduce foreign trades, says to me that the goverment/political powers are to be blamed even more.

First of all I would like to thank our Professor Loraine for recommending this movie, it gave me (hopefully other students in the Principal of Export and International Business) the sens of real life out there, how the deals are signed, the conditions and terms of the IMF, Word Bank, with the Emerging Countries.Life and debt an outstanding film for anyone wanting to understand globalization. The sight of dairy farmers selling their herds for hamburger because they can't compete with subsidized dried milk from the US is one of many painful and poignant scenes from the film. The common people of Jamaica are the ones whose voices are primarily given attention, but there is also a significant amount of time given to former PM Michael Manley as well as other officials.

When I went to Indonesia we did go to KFC, one of my companions wanted something familiar, I was happy there was seaweed wrapped rice.

Anyone who is interested in learning about how free trade and the IMF impact so-called third-world countries definitely need to view this documentary. I wonder why the Jamaican government did not stand to represent the people more. Recommended.

They want the workers in the poor countries to work for free. But don't count on it: the rich guys who run the global economy could care less about the poor countries and their people. However, I would have liked to see the opposition party giving their views of the problems raised at the time.

While the country's coffers are raided for interest repayments, health clinics are closed and schools go without equipment or even electricity -- the country hasn't even built a new hospital since the early 70s. It takes an unapologetic look at the new world order from the point of view of Jamaican workers, farmers and government officials. It was fantastic!
