A quick must read on your spring/summer reading list.I have to say that reading the other reviews of this book and how badly written it's supposed to be, as I did read this book, I found myself disagreeing. But he was much more than “just” a children’s writer. Reading Rogak's account of his life is to journey through the major trends of the twentieth-century and to discover a new appreciation for such a multifaceted talent. And some people fall in love with books about falling in love.
It is the life story of Shel from when he was very young until his death. Shel Silverstein was, I suspect, a fascinating man, but you wouldn't know it from this biography. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's curious about the life behind the children's book author and his other works in satirical country music and adult themes.Could not bring myself to spend the time finishing this book. Still, I'm glad the book exists, because Silverstein was a great oddball and should be appreciated for more than his kids books. Shel Silverstein was a composer, singer, cartoonist, illustrator, author -- with popular successes in all of those areas. What I liked most about this book is that I got to know Shel a bit better and the writer didn't talk down to me as a reader, but also didn't try to psycho-analyse him for me....she simply gave the facts as she could get them.......this is a really interesting biography....but definitely not for kids.Three stars more for Shel's life than the book. This isn't such a book. An excellent read.
